Raising Yousuf and Noor: diary of a Palestinian mother
I am a Palestinian from Gaza. I am a journalist. I am a mother. I am a Muslim. This blog is about the trials of raising my children between spaces and identities; displacement and occupation; and everything that entails from potty training to border crossings. My husband is a Palestinian refugee denied his right of return to Palestine, and thus OUR right to family life. Together, we endure a lot, and the personal becomes political. This is our story.

I think the second picture is my favorite. She contemplates the deeper implications of wearing pink bear ears, and decides: "Yes. Yes, this is acceptable."
Adorable! and her big brother looks so proud.
oh Laila! She is absolutely perfect! I love the pictures with big brother. Your family is so blessed.
She is adorable! Look at those eyes.
She is adorable!!!
You have the most beautiful children! (and that from a mom who thinks her children--now pretty grown up--were kind of cute too).
Mabrook! She is absolutely darling!
It looks like the camera confuses her. Compare her expressions when she is and isn't looking at it.
Mashallah, you have two very beautiful children.
Girldetective: I don't usually have time or energy to reply to comments but I have to see yours made me laugh out loud...:)
now off to bed for a few (two, three?) precious hours of sleep!!
I promise to try and post something new tomorrow--- also giving a talk alongside a panel at Columbia University on Thursday for those in NY! THe panel is called: Gaza-the world's biggest prison?

Laila, mashaAllah, she is beautiful.
I hope she grows up to see a Palestine free from the violence that has been troubling the region for such a long time, Ameen.
I have just read your blog forthe first time and I cried................
I mean, i am a Pakistani, living in Doha qatar with my husband and 15 months old baby and ofen find enough reasons to be depressed. Reading about you has made me say my thanks to Allah and pray for you.
How do you do it? How do you stay calm and write and travel and live life as normally as possible. I pray for courage for your son and will introduce my son to his story as soon as he is old enough.
I admire your courage and will try to do anything which can make a difference to the Palestinians.
Your children are absolutely adorable; and I concur with the earlier poster-don't cut Yousuf's hair-it is gorgeous!
