Update: Gaza

Gaza's punishment continues today. Communication has been intermittent, but we have managed to keep the lines open. My father just called to inform me he was ok- after warplanes bombed the Islamic University there, considered to be the Strip's premiere academic institution.

A little later I called my mother, only to hear her crying on the phone. "The planes are overhead" she cried "the planes are overhead". I tried to calm her down- planes overhead mean the "target" is further away. But in such moments of intense fear, there is no room for rationality and logic.

There is you, and there are war planes; and nothing in between, besides orders and a video game screen.

Her panic subsided slightly..."ok ok your father says it was the navy gunships...they hit the pier...the poor fishermen, its not like its even a real pier... its just the pier, just the pier..."

She tried to convince my father not to go out to the mosque today. But he did. Most people stayed indoors.

So far, the death toll has reach over 300, with nearly 1000 injured, many critically.

OCHA reports search operations for dead bodies trapped under the rubble are still ongoing. Piles of bodies were places in front of Shifa hospital for identification-some too charred or dismembered to identify.

Most fatalities were civilian police; others included at least 20 children, nine women, and 60 other unarmed civilians.

The plotters have plotted; the pawns were in place; and the living dead continue to be massacred without a protest.

here are two videos I received from Fida Qishta in south Gaza's Rafah refugee camp:

Hi there, I came across your blog and I would like to express from the bottom of my heart how deeply sorrowful I am that the Israeli attacks on the Palestinians have gone so far. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and all the Palestinians at this time.

I am an American girl and I am truly disgusted with the actions our government has taken to support the Israeli aggressor.
Despite what our media and president may announce there are some in this country who stand with the Palestinians.

May God watch over you and your loved ones..

is there anything we can do? i've been letter-writing and protest-attending, but it seems futile. i have no money and no influence, but i don't want to be complicit in this genocide. is there anything we can do?

Yes there is something everybody here can do. Post news/blog reports/vidoes about the Israeli attacks on various Internet forums and collective blogs such as digg.com or reddit.com. Make yourself a simple account on these sites, post the news/links, and search for other news already posted and vote them up so they make it to the front page of these forums and grab people's attentions.

I've lurked on your blog for about a year, I don't know you personally, but my first thoughts on Sunday morning when I turned on the news were hope that your family will be ok. I'm glad to hear that everyone is ok. You will all continue to be in my thoughts.

Civilian police, more like hamas gunmen. I've never experienced war, never felt the fear or seen the death but logic tells us the inocent will pay along with the guilty once the battle lines are drawn. The Jews could empty gaza of all the palestinians, believe or not this is showing restraint.

Dear Uncompassionate:

That's the logic that justifies the Hamas rockets on Israel. I utterly reject such justification. Violence is wrong, no matter who does it. Murder is wrong, no matter who does it. One is simply forced to conclude that a state that kills 100 civilians for every one of its people killed by a militant faction- that state bears more culpability.

In some places an eye for an eye is considered appropriate. Not in my home, but in some places. This was the beauty of the ancient Hebrew code- reducing it to an eye for an eye. Unfortunately, modern Israel has now returned to the practices of the ancient nations that surrounded ancient Israel, with 1,000 eyes for an eye.

Allah bless Palestinian people. Hamas Government was elected by the People of Palestine. They don't have F16, F16, Warship, thanks....Israel did what Hitler did to them! Bush show everybody he didn't like Muslim People...but Obama plays his own game for Politics! No justice in this World! We must pray 3 times: Ikhlass, Souratoul Falakh, Nassas anf 1 time Sa latoul Allah Nabil. Peace.

Hello,

I am so sad that my country, USA, has not denounced the Israeli bombing of your homeland. From the illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank to the inhumane checkpoints imposed upon Palestinians, I pray that this action by Israel will soon end and that a better Washington administration will make intelligent, serious efforts to help create the State of Palestine so that your people can live a healthy and happy life. Sign me...a guy from Maine.
