Raising Yousuf and Noor: diary of a Palestinian mother
I am a Palestinian from Gaza. I am a journalist. I am a mother. I am a Muslim. This blog is about the trials of raising my children between spaces and identities; displacement and occupation; and everything that entails from potty training to border crossings. My husband is a Palestinian refugee denied his right of return to Palestine, and thus OUR right to family life. Together, we endure a lot, and the personal becomes political. This is our story.

Whilst I don’t agree with your commentary about the Israelis, I really like the photo’s you have on this website. Keep up the good work.
For maximum punnishness, it should have been Yousuf setting out plants. Next year. A lot of landscaping has got to be done around there.
Great blog. It is good to hear from the "moderate Palestinian intelligentsia," for lack of a better phrase (pick your designation...couldn't come up with a better one, sorry). I knew that y'all were out there somewhere, so it's good to have confirmation.
Why did this happen laila?

was this the result of US cultural imperialism?
Dear Laila,
I just stumbled upon your blog, happily, because I've long been a fan of your journalism. Your son is beautiful as is your writing.
Do you have any idea what happened in Gaza City last night? I read a report on Al-Jazeera about a bombing, but the details are still quite slim.

Hi Marcy thanks for stopping by, and thank you for your kind praise.
Its stll unclear what happened exactly (though I did hear the explosions from my house). Israeli sources say it was a "work accident"-a munitions storage that exploded. Hamas denies that-says it was Israeli-orchestrated. My hunch is it may very well have been an Israeli planted bomb, so they could avoid being accused of breaching he ceasefire by continuing assasinations. In the end, who knows really.. :)
Bystander:
There may be several reasons. Partly, its ignorance by the community of their own religion (Islam) and how it tells them to behave (not like this obviously...). They were mad and took out their anger in a very wrong way.
Hi Laila, here is a link to a BBC news article you may find interesting. It's a series of photos of Gaza by photojournalist Geroge Azar.
Regarding the explosion in Gaza, I would suspect if it were an Israeli bomb, Hamas would be very upfront in accusing them of it. The fact that Hamas themselves deny the Israelis were involved suggests to me they probably weren't.
Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups have often been known to use the explosive triacetone triperoxide (or TATP for short), a very tempermental chemical that can easily detonate by accident when you are working with it - which is why regular military organizations do not use it. Militant and terrorist groups like TATP because the ingredients for it are readily available, and can even be purchased at your local grocery store.
If these guys were making or working with TATP, it should be expected that they'll get the occasional "surprise".
Assalaam alaikum Laila,
just found about your blog... and how nice to see Yousuf! My God, I still remember the emotion talking to Yassine over the phone when Yousuf ... time flies!
Yousuf looks sooooo cute! MashaAllah!
Take care my dear!
