Raising Yousuf and Noor: diary of a Palestinian mother
I am a Palestinian from Gaza. I am a journalist. I am a mother. I am a Muslim. This blog is about the trials of raising my children between spaces and identities; displacement and occupation; and everything that entails from potty training to border crossings. My husband is a Palestinian refugee denied his right of return to Palestine, and thus OUR right to family life. Together, we endure a lot, and the personal becomes political. This is our story.

Dear Laila,
I really enjoy your blog and the stories in Al-Jazeera.
I was sorry to see that the psychologist Mohammad from Gaza opted to quit blogging for the Jerusalem Post, and if they are still looking for a blogger from Gaza, I wish that you could do it. I think it's really important to have a forum like that.
It is great that your stories are reaching a wide audience.
Best from umkahlil to umyusef
Sorry for the misspelling of your son's name.
hello ~
I just checked your blog again to see if the interview I mention below was with you (it was) and I'm delighted to see your new photos and your description of a day at the beach, Gaza style.
I just found your interview with CKUT radio about the invasion of Jabaliya last year which my friend Mohammed Omer was in the middle of, photographing and reporting. It was a terrifying time and I'm grateful that he was physically unharmed. His report is sickening (be prepared).
In any case, thank you for this blog. It's a refreshing change to read about every day life during a more "peaceful" time.
Best wishes for you and your son and your family.
~ jen.
p.s. Umkahlil, thanks for the update about the psychologist Mohammed quitting his Jerusalem Post blog project. Honestly I'm not surprised — people were not asking questions about how to deal with traumatized families, they wanted him to "reprogram terrorists".
I hope they find another blogger for the project...
I'd vote for you, Laila!
